Getting Started with Deep Research
Deep Research is Waypoint's AI-powered investigation tool. It analyzes your escalation data, support conversations, and linked documents to answer questions in natural language. Whether you want to find patterns, look up specific cases, or identify trends, Deep Research delivers structured answers with evidence you can verify.
What Kinds of Questions Can You Ask?
Deep Research works best with specific, focused questions:
- Pattern analysis: "Which cases from the past month involve login failures?"
- Case lookups: "What is the status of case IS-322?"
- Trend identification: "Are there more escalations on Mondays than other days?"
- Root cause investigation: "What cases share a similar root cause to IS-311?"
Your First Research Query
Step 1: Navigate to Deep Research
Click Deep Research in the left sidebar. You will see the research interface with a chat input field at the bottom, suggestion cards above it, and your thread history on the right.

Step 2: Try a Suggestion Card or Type Your Own Question
Suggestion cards are pre-built query templates that help you get started quickly. Click any card to populate the chat input with a ready-to-submit query. You can also modify the pre-filled text or type your own question from scratch.
Step 3: Submit Your Query
Press Enter or click the Send button. You can also:
- Attach documents using the attachment button for additional context
- Select a different language using the language selector (default is Auto English)
Step 4: Review Your Results
Waypoint processes your query and generates a structured research report. A step counter shows progress while the AI works.

Understanding Your Results
Your research results are organized into three tabs:
Answer Tab
A completed research report with Executive Summary, Key Findings organized by theme, and supporting evidence.
This is the primary response with:
- Executive Summary — A high-level paragraph answering your question
- Key Findings — Categorized insights organized by theme
- Supporting Evidence Table — Specific case IDs with clickable links and relevance scores
- Recommendations — Suggested next steps based on the analysis
- Suggested Follow-ups — Additional queries to dig deeper
💡 Tip: Click any case ID (like IS-311) in the Evidence Table to jump directly to that case in the Escalation Assistant.
RESEARCH STEPS Tab
Shows the AI's reasoning process step by step. This is useful for understanding how the AI arrived at its conclusions and verifying the methodology.
RESOURCES Tab
Lists all source data used to generate the answer, including escalation cases, support conversations, and uploaded documents.
Managing Your Research History
All your past queries are saved as threads in the History panel on the right side of the page. You can:
- Search through past threads by keyword
- Click any thread to revisit the results
- Share threads with teammates for collaborative investigation
💡 Tips for Better Research Queries
- Be specific — "Which cases in the last week involve login failures?" works much better than "What are our problems?"
- Use follow-up queries — After getting initial results, ask follow-up questions to drill deeper
- Reference timeframes — Include dates or relative periods to scope the analysis
- Attach documents — Upload reference materials when asking about topics not fully covered in your case data
- Start with suggestion cards — They are a great way to discover what Deep Research can do
